How to Download AOL Active Virus Shield

AOL Active Virus Shield was a great antivirus while it was offered, as it offered Kaspersky definitions for free. Unfortunately, Active Virus Shield is no longer available for download at its homepage as of August 1, 2007. It was replaced by McAfee Virus Scan Plus - Special edition from AOL, which is available for free for users with a free AOL account. However, McAfee Virus Scan Plus doesn't have as good definitions, and AOL Active Virus Shield is still available for download at one website. There is a way to make it update properly.

Steps:
  1. Visit this directory, and download avs.msi.
  2. Run avs.msi. AOL Active Virus Shield will be installed, but it won't be able to obtain updates.
  3. Shutdown AOL Active Virus Shield, and kill the process if necessary.
  4. Edit your hosts file, which normally can be found at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt.
  5. Add the following line to the bottom of the hosts file: 127.0.0.1 download.newaol.com.
  6. Save and close your hosts file.
  7. Start and update AOL Active Virus Shield.
